Class Activity (Fahmul Masmu')

**IUP Students Sharpen Listening Skills Through News-Based Learning Activity**

**Yogyakarta, 23 October 2025** — The International Undergraduate Program (IUP) students of UIN Sunan Kalijaga participated in an engaging **Listening Class Activity** focusing on authentic English news materials. The session aimed to improve students’ comprehension skills, vocabulary, and critical thinking through exposure to real-world news broadcasts.

Led by Dr. Ridwan, S.Ag., M.Hum., the activity introduced students to various international news clips from channels such as BBC, Al Jazeera, and CNN. Students were encouraged to listen actively, identify key ideas, and summarize the main points of each report.

The class also included group discussions where students shared their opinions on current global issues presented in the news. This activity not only enhanced their listening proficiency but also strengthened their ability to express ideas clearly and confidently in English.

“Listening to authentic news helps us understand different accents and speaking styles,” said one IUP student. “It also keeps us updated with what’s happening around the world.”

Through this session, students learned practical strategies such as note-taking, predicting information, and focusing on keywords. The lecturer emphasized that listening to authentic English materials is essential for developing academic and professional communication skills in a global context.

The activity reflects the IUP’s ongoing commitment to creating an interactive, meaningful, and globally oriented learning environment that prepares students to become competent communicators and critical thinkers
